Tiefling

To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the tiefling. And to twist the knife, tieflings know that this is because a pact struck generations ago infused the essence of Shadows—the darkest of magic—into their bloodline. Their appearance and their nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their children and their children’s children will always be held accountable.

Perhaps of all apprentices, the Tiefling were the most unlikely to occur- an accidental mistrust on humanities part resulted in monstrosities they would become. It was said that upon the disappearance of Kauhl Par that he would stumble upon a gathering of humans, frightened by imminent changes that would follow the books disappearance. To divert their fears, those brave and curious as he would embrace the scriptures and recite the devotion of their souls for a spell of protection. Alas, none truly know if the spell was misspoken or deceived by the serpent Kauhl, as their flesh would begin to contort in color and their skulls would shoot like thorns the horns of a behemoth. Abandoned, this gathering fled their village in fear of what the commoners response would be upon the sight of their newfound monstrosity. From there, Tiefling would continue to breed and with the tale, were eternally met with a scowl from most men.

Outdated as the parable may be, many Tiefling believe that Kauhl Par did not harbor ill intent towards them and thank the book of shadows for their unique abilities.

Physical Appearance

Tieflings are derived from human bloodlines, and in the broadest possible sense, they still look human. However, their infernal heritage has left a clear imprint on their appearance. Tieflings have large horns that take any of a variety of shapes: some have curling horns like a ram, others have straight and tall horns like a gazelle’s, and some spiral upward like an antelopes’ horns. They have thick tails, four to five feet long, which lash or coil around their legs when they get upset or nervous. Their canine teeth are sharply pointed, and their eyes are solid colors—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil.

Tiefling stand at the average height of humans, which can range from 5 to six feet in height. Their ears, while short, are also pointed but not always if a tiefling is that of half blood. Their skin tones cover the full range of human coloration, but also include various shades of red, purple or blue. Their hair, cascading down from behind their horns, is usually dark, from black or brown to dark red, blue, or purple.

Lifespan

Tiefling do not outlive their human counterparts by far, up to 150 years. They will also age as humans do, however in their years beyond the human, they will appear far more ghastly than a human elder. It is not uncommon to see an Elder tiefling missing a part of their horns, a missing tale or with an incredible hunch in their spine.
