Notoria

In the beginning

Long ago, before there were scriptures of history or great tales of old, there was another yarn of when peace existed between all creatures. An era where magic was simple and nondestructive. However, there was a book of shadows, forbidden in the lands of Notoria and kept under the highest guard.

One of these guards was a great mage who went by he name of Tameran. Thriving as a teacher of the arcane arts to many students, he would spread his philosophy of peace and the basic knowledge of magic. In a particular village, he would stumble upon a young mage, Kauhl Par who possessed a unique form of magic: the ability to transfer himself between any lands with a portal. His talent was extraordinary and given that the boy was orphaned, Tameran would take the lad beneath his wing and teach him all that he knew.

For many years, Kauhl proved to be one of the most advanced Casters Notoria had ever witnessed and due to this, he was accepted at only sixteen years of age into the circle of mages, the greatest enchanters.
However, given admission to such responsibilities, Kauhl's burgeoning curiosity would bring him before the forbidden book whenever master Tameran found slumber. Within, incantations of wicked nature foretold of terrible beasts released through a particular canticle and ritual. Enchantments that preached of inferno elements and summoning the dead. Worst of all, Kauhl would find himself intrigued by these anecdotes.

One day, Tameran would wake to find both the book and the boy missing and for three days, Kauhl was no where to be found. Whence he returned, the book was in hand and he had taken an oath never to touch it again. However, word had already reached the circle of the mages and panic had began to spread from here. The punishment for those that indulge in the book of shadows would be banished to a realm outside of their own, where only darkness would keep them for eternity. Tameran, torn for his only son, could not find the will within him to banish Kauhl. Yet another within the circle, a wood elf named Kane Terrowin, would take this task upon himself and dispelled the boy into a dimension of the unknown.

Alas, it was too late. An inspection was performed after Kauhl's banishment, and the book was simply masked with a magical aura. The book of shadows had been banished along with the young boy. Copies of the book were distributed all across the land and despite that it's knowledge was outlawed, panic would cause many to turn to it's creed for protection or power.

Come the turn of every winter which the young mage, Kauhl, had been vanished, a portal would open, a blight would strike, each year different than the last. For centuries, dragons would appear as if from no where, the Altmer elves would turn to stone upon a full moon and soon became a dying race. The development of magic separated Notoria's people and waged war against many divisions.

Kauhl would defy his curse, returning as a master over the dark arts. Vengeance in heart and power in hand, he would cleave through the lands with a great army of the undead, gaining allies in those that followed his rule.

Only Tameran survived the era and with the ebbing art of honest magic at a loss, he would sacrifice the remainder of his magic into a barrier over the existing land and rename it 'Elsgadir'.
Since this, the lands of Elsgadir have managed to reflourish in both population, fortitude and wealth. While they are still exposed to the ruthlessness of black magic, they remain unscathed directly by the dignitary of imminent death.

Here, Tameran searches for his next apprentices in hopes to overthrow the dark overlord.
Who claims to be a worthy apprentice for peace? And who claims to be a dignitary of death? Only you can decide.
