Goliath

Goliath2.jpg

The visionary commander, carved of mountain, remains our true champion of strength.

At the highest of Ashremar mountain peaks — far above the slopes where trees grow and where the air is thin and the frigid winds howl — dwell the reclusive goliaths. Few folk can claim to have seen a goliath, and fewer still can claim friendship with them. Goliaths wander a bleak realm of rock, wind, and cold. Their bodies look as if they are carved from mountain stone and give them great physical power. Their spirits take after the wandering wind, making them nomads who wander from peak to peak. Their hearts are infused with the cold regard of their frigid realm, leaving each goliath with the responsibility to earn a place in the tribe or die trying.
Due to the great demands of simply existing as a Goliath, as they require four times the nourishment of a regular man, many of these brethren have fallen victims to famine and wars of the past. Every day brings a new challenge to a goliath. Food, water, and shelter are rare in the uppermost mountain reaches. A single mistake would bring doom to an entire tribe, while an individual’s heroic effort could have ensured the entire group’s survival. Goliaths thus place a premium on self-sufficiency and individual skill. They have a compulsion to keep score, counting their deeds and tallying their accomplishments to compare to others. Goliaths love to win, but they see defeat as a prod to improve their skills.

Hundreds of years ago in Ashremar, there were settlements beyond the Dwarven village where the goliath roamed. They were revered as reclusive warriors and protectors of the peaks. Yet At the outbreak of the book of shadows, many were petitioned by kingdoms with goods and food, or even enslaved for their brute strength by throngs of Drow- who forced them into the caverns of Werneth. Yet Kingdoms could not satiate their thirst nor appetite in their great numbers and many would pass as a result of this.
Today, few Goliath remain and those who do are best kept as friends rather than foes, for their force is said to be greater than that of a hundred men.

Physical Appearance

These nomadic humanoids outsize even the orcs, ranging between 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 feet tall and weighing as much as 400 pounds- with no determination between gender. Their brow bones are adorned with bony, supraorbital ridges and their grey flesh is rigid and tough as stone. Their eyes are commonly two toned, icey blue or pale greens. The majority of men do not have a thread of hair, whereas women often dread their lengthy tresses, decorating them with feathers and stones. One of the most distinctive features of the goliath is the darker (often vertically symmetrical) patches of skin that covered their entire bodies. Goliaths believed that these markings somehow explained or controlled their fate or destiny. For this reason, goliaths never tattooed themselves as this could affect their future. Goliath skin is littered with bony growths called "lithoderms". These growths are roughly the size of a coin and appeared like studded pebbles on their arms, shoulders, torso or head.
